Retail and Consumer

The business of retail is a personal interest that I turned into a professional one when I made an internal transfer from the lifestyle team to the main business news desk of The Business Times in 2015. I requested for the retail and consumer beat, then newly created by our editor-in-chief, and tracked an industry that was – and is still – going through a large upheaval brought about by technology and e-commerce.


Within a month of taking up the new portfolio, I broke several front page stories on the sale of a prominent portfolio company of LVMH-backed L Capital Asia (now L Catterton) and the controversial forced eviction of unlicensed shops by the Singapore authorities.



Week in China

As a regular contributor to China-focussed trade publication Week in China, I report on retail trends in China and track prominent Chinese consumer brands such as Kweichow Moutai, Bao Master, Want Want and Starbucks competitor, Luckin Coffee.


The Business Times

After 3 years on the Executive Lifestyle team of The Business Times, I made an internal transfer to the business desk, where I took on the retail and consumer news portfolios.


In this newly created role, I reported on company earnings and M&A activities of retail and FMCG firms; profiled CEOs and captains of industry; and tracked macro-economic influences and consumer and hospitality news trends in Singapore and the region, such as omni-channel retail strategies, offline-to-online convergence and labour issues.


I also produced several front page news stories that became closely followed cases nationally, including the high-profile sale of one of L Capital Asia's private equity portfolio companies, as well as the ousting of unlicensed retailers in Singapore's rapidly gentrifying Tiong Bahru neighbourhood.
